Healthcare Privacy Facts

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my workplace need health care privacy awareness training?
Every health care provider has a responsibility to ensure that all staff members understand their responsibilities regarding the handling of personal information. This includes physicians, allied health professionals, employees, and other associates of health care clinics who provide direct patient care as well as those who are not directly involved in patient care. Privacy awareness training is a key strategy to ensure all health care workers at every level of an organization understand how to correctly collect, use and disclose personal health information.
What provincial legislation is covered by the online Privacy Awareness in Health Care training?
The Alberta course refers to Alberta’s Health Information Act (HIA) and Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA). The Ontario course refers to Ontario’s Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) and Bill 119, the Health Information Protection Act (HIPA).
Does the Privacy Awareness in Health Care online training apply to provinces other than Alberta and Ontario?
Our generic Privacy Awareness in Health Care Training is appropriate for employees and leaders in any industry or organization across Canada. While the programs refer respectively to Alberta and Ontario specific legislation, many other provinces have health information legislation as well. While some of the terminology differs from province to province, our privacy awareness training is applicable to any organization that collects, uses, and discloses personally identifying information. Developed exclusively for Corridor by Certified Privacy and Health Information Management Expert Jean L. Eaton, the course delivers the most current information and today’s best practices for health care privacy policies and procedures.
How often is the privacy awareness training updated?
Corridor’s generic workplace violence training is kept “evergreen” with new information and updates as they occur. We ensure that updates to workplace programs and procedures are integrated appropriately and in a timely manner.
How do I know this training will fit with my company?
Our generic courses provide basic, practical guidance so employees and supervisors understand expectations related to privacy in health care. The learning material is designed to complement policies and procedures your company may already have in place by providing the practical “how to” side of policy application in day-to-day work life.

Alternatively, you can take the next step and contact us to learn how we can integrate your company policy and procedures into a customized learning program.

What if my company doesn't have a privacy policy?
If your company does not have a policy, Corridor’s generic courses equip your staff with the latest information on typical health care privacy expectations and responsibilities so they can confidently and correctly handle personal health information. Not only will the training support your corporate social responsibility, but it ensures you and your staff understand how and when to address sensitive privacy-related issues so they don’t become a liability and compromise the integrity of your organization.
