Following a number of legal battles since 2012, Suncor will be moving ahead with a random alcohol and drug testing program for safety-sensitive positions at its Wood Buffalo sites in Northern Alberta. The company has been trying to implement random testing for the last seven years as a step towards further ensuring a safe work environment at its sites.
Unifor Local 707A decided last December to drop its fight with Suncor over random alcohol and drug testing in the interest of promoting safety and the importance of workers being fit for duty throughout their work day or shift. The company plans to implement random testing in the first quarter of 2019.
Like many companies, Suncor already conducts alcohol and drug testing for pre-employment and post-incident situations. The random testing will be carried out by third-party experts using the same collection methods currently in place at Suncor.
Alcohol and drug testing is an important component of many alcohol and drug policies, but misinformation can lead to confusion around how and when testing may occur. Educating employees on a company’s policy and procedures clarifies company expectations.
