Respect in the Workplace – Training For Leaders

Listen. Consider. Communicate.

47% of women and 31% of men reported experiencing some form of harassment or sexual assault in the workplace at some point during their career (Statistics Canada, 2024)

Roughly $19 billion is lost annually due to bullying and harassment related absences (Statistics Canada)

50% of employees who are bullied at work experience mental health issues as a result (Rubin Thomlinson)

All Canadian workers have a responsibility to support a positive work environment that is free of abusive behaviour and bullying. In addition, companies and their leaders need to understand the legislation that supports a respectful workplace. In most Canadian provinces and territories, employers are required to have strategies in place that help prevent workplace harassment and violence, supported by clear policies, procedures, and training.

When companies and organizations promote a culture of respect in the workplace, not only do they support an employee’s well-being, but they also experience higher employee retention and greater productivity. Why? Because a respectful workplace allows employees to feel valued, engaged, and motivated to share ideas, perspectives, and strengths – even if they are different from others.

Why Respect in the Workplace Training Matters

Consider the following:

  • A study found that 50% of Canadians who are targets of workplace bullying suffer from mental health-related issues, and those impacted take twice as much sick time compared to other employees. Rubin Thomlinson
  • Workplace bullying contributes to a $19 billion annual cost in Canada, primarily due to employee absence related to harassment and bullying. MyHRworkplacefairnesswest.ca

Under the Canada Labour Code and provincial and territorial occupational health and safety legislation employers have a “duty of care” to foster a culture of respect in the workplace. This duty of care means that employers must take measures to protect employees from unacceptable or harmful behaviour, which includes psychological harassment or bullying at work to extreme cases of physical violence. Canadian workplace harassment laws can also be found under the Criminal Code of Canada and Human Rights Legislation.

Part 2: Building Your Workplace Harassment Prevention Program

Leaders who promote a positive work culture and raise awareness of appropriate work conduct among staff can look forward to greater employee retention and an overall respectful workplace culture. Conversely, employers with toxic work environments could face financial costs for absenteeism, presenteeism, turnover, and lower productivity related to the stress and mental health outcomes of harassment at work.

For these reasons, companies need to have strong policies and clear procedures in place that support and model a respectful work environment. Part 2 of Corridor’s Leader Training Package lays out the components of a thoughtful harassment prevention program. Learning content will help leaders:

  1. Become familiar with an employer’s legislative obligations to maintain a harassment and violence-free workplace.
  2. Have a better understanding of corporate policy and procedures to prevent workplace harassment and violence.
  3. Know what steps to take if an employee is a victim of workplace harassment or other abusive behaviour.
  4. Know how to effectively respond to complaints of workplace harassment, bullying, and violence.
